Research Facilities
The department occupies Shoemaker Hall, a five-story building on the main Oxford campus that includes the Pullen Herbarium and other scientific collections.
Research is supported by the University of Mississippi Libraries, the Mississippi Center for Supercomputing Research and collaborating units including the National Center for Physical Acoustics, the Research Institute for Pharmaceutical Sciences, the National Center for Natural Products Research, the National Center for Computational Hydroscience and Engineering, and the Department of BioMolecular Sciences in the School of Pharmacy.
The University of Mississippi Field Station is just 11 miles from the main campus and encompasses over 700 acres of forests, wetlands, and grasslands, over 200 experimental pond and streams, and houses the Center for Water and Wetland Research. Biology field research also occurs at nearby sites in Holly Springs National Forest, which includes the Tallahatchie Experimental Forest, and at Strawberry Plains Audubon Center. The Department has ongoing collaborations with scientists at the USDA National Sedimentation Laboratory which is located in Oxford, the Mississippi Department of Wildlife, Fisheries, and Parks which has a branch office in Shoemaker Hall, and the University of Southern Mississippi Gulf Coast Research Laboratory.
Individual research faculty occupy laboratories that are equipped with instrumentation and facilities to support a range of life sciences research from molecular and cell biology through ecosystem ecology.
