Research Facilities
The University of Mississippi Department of Biology is a comprehensive life science department with 22 tenured and tenure track faculty and other research active instructional faculty working in many diverse areas of biology. Our research encompasses cell and molecular biology, evolution, and ecology, with many areas of interdisciplinary strength including symbioses and species interactions, restoration and conservation biology, behavior and neurobiology, biodiversity, microbiology, and freshwater/wetlands ecology.
We are a highly collaborative department, sharing interests and expertise. We train our graduate students and undergraduate students to think broadly, to use interdisciplinary approaches, and to develop innovative insights into fundamental biological processes.
The department occupies Shoemaker Hall, a five-story building on the main Oxford campus that houses laboratories that are equipped with instrumentation to support a range of life sciences research from molecular and cell biology through ecosystem ecology. Shoemaker Hall also houses our Imaging Core, Molecular Core, and the Pullen Herbarium.
Researchers in Biology also utilize the University of Mississippi Field Station located 11 miles from campus and encompassing over 700 acres of forests, wetlands, and grasslands, as well as experimental ponds and streams.
